Mission Team Gets Focused About Serving

Your Missions team has been up to some excellent work during these first few months of 2009.  Already the team has distributed nearly $24,000 in second mile giving to fifteen different agencies that are extending the love and mercy of Christ to those in need.  The team also sponsored another excellent trip to Slidell, LA to assist in the hurricane recovery efforts there.  And now this team which serves diligently in Christ's name, has taken a monumental step in improving their focus and sharing their vision with the congregation.

To organize its efforts, the Mission's Team has identified six major issues that call for a Christ-centered response from the community of High Street Church.  These are issues of local importance as well as global concern.  They include: 

  • Mentoring and Education
  • Healthcare
  • A Healthy Planet
  • Economic Opportunity
  • Hunger
  • Justice

For each of these major areas, the Mission's Team will dedicate two months to focus on the concern and lead people to reach out lovingly and prayerfully in care for God's people.  The team will encourage action around each of the areas of focus in the following ways:

  1. Educating about the concern, its root causes and potential solutions
  2. Inspiring proactive prayer for the concern.
  3. Inviting hands on action through service and advocacy.  For each of the six topics, the Mission's team will develop an all-church local service project to engage the issue.
  4. Encouraging donation for the concern.  We will continue to make use of bucket offerings and second mile missions giving to support organizations that directly work with the issue of focus.

In June we will a focus on the issue of Economic Opportunity.  The efforts of the Mission's team will be coupled with the beginning of new sermon series on June 7 that considers the nature of poverty.  We encourage you to look for more information about ministries that create Economic Opportunity by visiting the Mission's Bulletin Board on the Floor #1, reading your Tower Topics, and checking out the website at www.munciehighstreet.com/serving.    There will be resources available to help you become involved in advocacy or hands on service.  In fact, your Mission's team is at work designing an all-church service opportunity focused Economic Opportunity to take place on the second weekend of July.
