Signs of Invasion

There is a difference between listening to words of instruction and being moved by acts of transformative power. Jesus does not solely speak, he makes things happen. Through signs and wonders, Jesus ushers in the invasion of God's new way of life.

A New Kind of Revolution

We assume that from first impressions we can identify and label other people. Contemporaries Jesus' day attempted to classify him a s a certain type of religious person. But he didn't quite fit in any of the standard lists. He was a new kind of world changer, introducing a revolutionary type of revolution.

The Crayon Box

We enjoy having an assortment of crayons at our disposal when coloring; the variety of colors can enrich our picture. God, too, has created a world full of diversity. No two of us is just alike. We find ourselves in a "crayon box" world of people different from us. Each of us is loved and valued by God. None of us is in charge of that "crayon box." It is God's. He can use each of us to color his world in a way no other person can. Therefore, each person is to be respected and loved.

Living in a Foreign Land

After Jesus left the manger, he and his family found themselves as refuges in a foreign land. We are assured of God's protective presence in times of chaos and the experience of a different culture. We are called to be that protective presence for others when they find themselves struggling away from home.

Start with the Fundamentals

Learning and practicing the fundamentals are important in sports. The same is true for life. We United Methodists have three general rules: 1] Do no harm; 2] Do good; and 3] Stay in love with God. We also have the five practices of radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity. Even more fundamental for us as Christians is our identity as children of God and heirs through God. Each day we decide over and over again whether to live out our fundamental identity or to choose something less.

Does Love Win - Does God Give Up?

Does love win? Love only wins because God never gives up on us in this life and in the life to come. Yet, out of his love, he offers us the freedom to choose. We can even choose to refuse his love and thus, choose our own hell. But even that choice does not end God's inviting love for us.

Is it OK to Doubt?

There are times we may feel it inappropriate to voice our doubts in the Christian community. The story of Jacob is an example to how, with courage an authenticity, someone can wrestle with their faith.

What About Non-Christians: Part 2

It is not our job to evaluate the soil, to decide who we think might be a worthy candidate to hear of God's love. We are called to sow the seeds of God's story.

What Does God Do With Suffering

The bridge is one image that describes God's activity within suffering. Just as a bridge connects two points, God is forever connected to us, present with us, in our suffering. Just as a traffic helps cars to keep moving, the spirit of God invites us to move to care for those who suffer. Just as a bridge takes us to vantage points that would be difficult to see, God bends and transforms suffering to who us new mercies. Just as the best bridges withstand storms and the test of time, God will never leave us and proclaims victory over suffering.

What Does it Mean to be Blessed

To be blessed is to be on the right path in life. While God ultimately judges whether or not we are on that right path, there are markers along the way. These markers include a sense of "oughtness," serving others, and the quality of the lives of the people with whom we find ourselves in league.
