OLDER ADULT MINISTRIES

High Street UMC is known as an advocate for the elderly in our community. Each year, there are approximately 1,000 folks whose lives are enriched, assisted, enlivened, and touched by these varied ministries and programs. The outreach programs of Thursday Luncheon, Update Learning, SHIP and Elder-Law counseling involve men and women from several counties. Members who are "retirement" age are active in nearly every ministry of the church, and those who are unable to be active are loved and supported through caring ministries. For information about any of these ministries and programs, contact Deborah Musick.

Thursday Luncheon

More than 100 folks representing over 30 different churches gather each Thursday at 11:30 in Parish Hall. A meal, fellowship, and a program are provided for a mere $3.50. Reservations are due by Tuesday afternoon through the church office, 747-8500.  On the first Thursday of each month, volunteer nurses provide blood pressure checks.  The volunteers who cook, serve and clean up are older adults who choose to serve in this way.

Update Learning

This continuing education program is held each spring and fall. The next 6-week session will begin Monday, March 26th, 2012.  Call the church office to be placed on the mailing list: 747-8500. 38 different classes will be offered, including Bible, line dancing, knitting, cards of all kinds, and so many more.

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

SHIP provides free unbiased health insurance information for seniors and pre-retirees.  SHIP is part of a federal network of State Health Insurance Assistance Programs. Each Thursday morning, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., trained SHIP counselors are available in the church office. No appointment is necessary.

Elder-Law Counseling

An attorney is available at the church on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at no charge. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the church: 747-8500.

Homebound Ministry

Visitation is vital to the well-being of all homebound members. Members are visited by the pastors, United Methodist Women, Stephen Ministers, and the Fellowship Partners Ministry. For information about becoming one who visits or one who receives visits, please contact Pastor Charlotte.
