Economic Opportunity
Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you,
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. (Isaiah 58:6-8)
POVERTY is...
-an empty stomach - a lack of shelter - insufficent healthcare
- a loss of hope - a feeling of inadequacy - a life of desperation
As the people of God, we are called to identify with and serve in solidarity with the poor. Jesus, like the Old Testament prophets before him, constantly embraced those who were impoverished and called for a life of worship that reflected acts of mercy for the broken. It is God's gift to the church to reach out and to embrace the poor and it is one of the primary areas of focus for the United Methodist Denomination and the 21st century church.
ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY is...
-listening to the needs - discovering the gifts - opening a door
finding a job - establishing an address - feeding your family
Through prayer, education, advocacy, and service, High Street Church is embracing the invitation to create economic opportunity for its neighbors in Muncie and the millions of people worldwide to get out of poverty.
