Nourishment
Did you know that in the United States, thirty-six million people, including thirteen million children, live in households where individuals have to skip meals to make their food last? Around the world 852 million people are undernourished. This means the body is weakened from lack of food and is unable to fight off disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, the statistics of malnourishment continue to increase. How can this be? The world can produce enough food for all people to live healthy lives. We have the means and technology to feed the world. We just are not doing the job of getting the food and resources to the places that need it most.
The prophet Isaiah proclaims, "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter?"
Throughout the Bible is a call for followers of Christ to feed the hungry. Jesus himself said, “I am the bread of life.” If we are to feed on his grace and nourishment in our lives then we are also called to become the bread of life for others. When we feed the hungry or give water to the thirsty we are serving Jesus himself.
These are High Street Church's efforts
to eliminate hunger and provide nourishment to all people!
